in which the homes are worth less than what their current "owners" paid for them.

From Paul Kedrosky:

"
Mapping Underwater San Diego County Homeowners

Fairly eye-popping graphic of the percentage of homes in various San Diego County zip codes in which the homes are worth less than what their current "owners" paid for them. It is essentially a vintages phenomenon, at least so far, with the most carnage done in the exurbs into which the population extended most aggressively over the last decade.

Me:

You should take a look at the Central Valley. The problem there, as in your graph, is trying to figure out who will buy these homes and at what price? I just can't see this as being anything but a long term problem, especially since, oddly, many of the worst mortgages were sold at the height of the market. They were paying top price. How crazy is that? Now we're in a depression. Give me a scenario of these houses being bought up again in the near future. Of course, I'm assuming that the government doesn't further subsidize this problem. If it does, it could obviously help out in the short term, but a long term subsidy could be massive.
